Healing Through Verse: An Author's Debut Book

Navigating life's highs and lows often feels like carrying the weight of the world on our shoulders. It can be challenging to distill meaningful lessons from our experiences without being swept away on an emotional roller coaster. Relationships, in particular, can lead us to question aspects of ourselves we once felt certain about—our confidence, self-worth, and our true desires.

'Memories of Me' is a collection of poems that I wrote over the span of a decade. These poems reflect pivotal moments in my life, many of which emerged during the tumultuous periods surrounding the end of my marriage, multiple miscarriages, and a subsequent toxic relationship. Initially written as a personal means to express and process my emotions, these poems were never intended for sharing, however in my lived experience as as health care provider I know that we often learn from others. My hopes in sharing the poetry was that so others can perhaps find understanding in their own experiences, and sometimes sharing the deepest and darkest parts of ourselves with others can in fact be healing and empowering.

These poems represent trying to make sense of various forms of heartache felt as part of the human experience, and the turmoil it can have on our sense of self. Throughout my journey, a recurring lesson has emerged: the importance of retaining our true essence amidst adversity, resisting conforming to others expectations of ourselves while sacrificing your authenticity. Change and discomfort are unsettling however they do propel us toward growth, offer new perspectives and force us to become more resilient.

One of the profound aspects of being human is our ability to feel deep emotions, including love, which also renders us susceptible to pain and loss. The law of polarity reminds us that these extremes are interconnected—without understanding sadness, we cannot fully appreciate joy. So, on those darkest days when the weight of the world feels unbearable and I cant swallow around that lump in my throat I remind myself that these emotions are intertwined; the profound love and joy I've known are the flip side of this pain.

I believe that by openly exploring themes of loss, grief, and resilience in my poetry, I can help bridge the gap between suffering and healing. Even in the darkest moments, I hope my words offer a glimmer of hope and reflection on my personal journey toward becoming a stronger, more resilient individual.
